This was a fun book to read.
I ordered this book because I plan to retire soon and thought it sounded like fun to be able to raise chickens and sell eggs.

I got “You Can Build a Chicken Tractor…” because I was looking for chicken tractor plans. This book has some of the most detailed step by step plans for building a chicken tractor I have seen. Coming from a ‘non-construction’ background, I was pretty happy with the detail they gave for building a chicken tractor. The instructions were easy to follow, and EVEN I was able to make a chicken tractor with these instructions. (Not bad for someone who “drive” is something in a computer, not something you do with nails.)
I am only giving three stars because I felt like the book had too much information about other things “chicken related”. For example, the book talks about things like, getting chickens for the first time, chicken nutrition, eating and cooking eggs (including recipes), how to deal with chicken healthcare issues, how to make money with chickens, and a lot more similar topics.
All of these topics are good topics for people to know about when dealing with chickens, and the information was all good information. My complaint, though, is that I really got the book looking for information about chicken tractors. All of the extra information was, for me, just that…extra information that I wasn’t looking for. If you want the extra information, this book would probably be great for you. If I was looking for those topics to be covered, I would probably have given this book a 4 or 5 star rating.
As my rating stands, I am giving ‘Chicken Tractor’ a “half-full” rating. The book is totally full, and over flowing, but “half-full” is all I was looking for.

You can build a chicken tractor
I enjoyed this book very much, also found it useful. My husband build the tractor with instructions from the book, no problem. Good information also on raising chickens.

The Merriam’s book contains a tremendous amount of information on keeping chickens. In fact, the title could have been something along the lines of “An In Depth Look at Backyard Flocks–with a detailed chapter on how to build a portable coop.” The conversational style can seem a little long-winded and disjointed at times, but very friendly and informative. If you know ~nothing~ about chickens, this book will teach you what you need to know to get started. If you already have chickens–or have been researching them for a while–get it just for the information on how to build the very cute tractor on the cover.

The worst book I ever bought
This is by far the worst book that I have ever bought. It is poorly written and contains very little useful information.

Homesteaders and Citydwellers need this book. This not only tells how to build a chicken tractor (which is a portable chicken coop) with all the suggested supplies, instructions and great photographs but has other information as well. Persons wanting to raise chickens for eggs and/or meat can use this book to find out where to start, what to feed, how to care for, how to discern a fresh egg, cooking with eggs (a few recipes included), and how to kill, clean and butcher a chicken. This is a very helpful resource for today’s family who want to do more for themselves and have more control over feeding their family. There is something in here for everyone from carpenters to cooks and anyone wanting to learn about chickens.
